My kind of fairy

November 28, 2011

Since my last post about the drag queen fairy I've had a few folk enquiring as to what my choice of Christmas fairy would be. I've actually already got a fairy which sits near the top of our christmas tree, also purchased by my mother. This one is a ballerina fairy, quite sedate, a replica of the one we had when I was a child, she's the Sandy of the fairy world rather than risky Rizzo, however, as you can never have too many fairy lights or fairies in your life I could find room on my tree for this little lady or one of her friends...

St Andrew's party

November 27, 2011

We joined our friends John and Libby for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's St Andrew's party night on Saturday - I feel there should be a comma in that sentence somewhere…It was a horrible driech night so it was a taxi to the city centre then a pre-theatre at Two fat ladies before the concert; what a fabulous name for a restaurant, it almost vindicates stuffing your face with sticky toffee pudding! The concert is always a lot of fun, I'm a sucker for pipe bands and kilts and Phil Cunningham is a great host; If you like a bit of traditional Scottish you can see and hear Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham here. The concert was also a bit of a celebration for the pair, they've been playing together for twenty five years. Phil quipped that their partnership has outlived both their marriages…
I took the photograph of the orchestra as they were warming up, all the noise and chatter, I like that unstructured part of the evening before the formal bit, although the concert certainly isn't stuffy in the slightest; every year I tell myself that I'm going to make more of an effort and go to more things like this but then whoosh the year seems to fly past and all good intentions are forgotten. Maybe it's just as well, I could see myself becoming a Phil Cunningham groupie – it's the eighties long hair and cheeky smile…dear God, I can't believe I just wrote that…

My neighbourhood has gone crazy because a Wholefoods supermarket has just opened. Mr K can't see what all the fuss is about but I love it, and I'm so happy that it stocks canned pumpkin and I'll finally be able to make pumpkin bread at last. It's ridiculously expensive but full of great organic goodies. I got talking to this nice lady who actually makes Just Chilli , isn't that nice, not just a sales person but the actual producer of the product. Susan gave me a recipe for meatballs plus a recommendation for her carrot and coriander soup using a couple of spoonfuls of Just Chilli. That's tomorrow night's task.

A friend gave me this little "Dull women have tidy homes" cross stitch picture many years ago for a birthday present, she and I have a similar take on housework. I live my life pretty much with the conviction that at the end of my days I will definitely not look back and wish that I had spent more of my precious time doing housework! Can you imagine thinking; If I only had my time again, I would dust every day, and wash the windows every week ...

3 Cheers

Sara and Craig moved into their flat today; they are now home owners. It's been quite a journey with stress and tears and inefficient lawyers and horrible bankers and I now know why the whole property market is at a standstill, it's because it's almost impossible for first time buyers to get mortgages...God I HATE the banks!
Still, this young couple have managed it and for that their family should be thankful, coincidentally just a day after Thanksgiving, wouldn't it have been cool if they had managed to move into their flat on Thanksgiving. It's a funny thing but I have been fixating recently on things to be thankful for, rather like some scary religious fundamentalist, it's not even as if we are American but I actually like the idea of reflecting on things to be thankful for.  Mr K is the opposite, swearing about the state of the world and the fact we will all have to work until we are 101 before we can get a pension. Well, I've got a lot to be thankful for and I'll not be dissuaded from that thought tonight - 3 cheers for Sara and Craig and their first home together... Hip, hip hooray! Fairy tales

November 23, 2011

I've been missing recently from my little blog; it must be the autumn equinox or something but I always indulge in a bit of introspection at this time of year, not bad but not good either. It's over now so I'm back!
My mother, the QVC Queen, Victoria and I were shopping on Sunday, looking at Christmas decorations. I pointed out this little lady to Victoria; OMG I said - who would buy a fairy that looks like a drag queen? Two seconds later we spotted my mother with the drag queen in basket heading towards the checkout; I panicked because I thought it might be a present for me, but no, it's safely back in my mother's little flat, no doubt getting prepared for Christmas, throwing a few more sequins on, back combing the hair a little more, one happy little drag queen fairy.
